Positive Engagement: The Heart and Soul of ClasStars

ClasStars was built for educators to help kids succeed in the classroom. We’re built on four core values: Positive Engagement, Identifying Invisible Progress, Academic Engagement, and Real-Time Attendance. In this Q&A series, we dive into each of these four facets and how each one specifically can help you – and your students.

What is the most valuable resource in education – by far?

You, the teacher.

When you as the teacher focus on something, good things will happen; this obviously applies also to students. When you focus your attention and effort on kids – especially kids who are struggling – you will most likely be the difference between success and failure. It won’t solve their problems, but it will make their school experience more manageable, which will make the biggest difference of all.

What is a readily available tool that all teachers have, that you can give to each and every student every single day to brighten their day, inspire their soul, build their confidence, help them persevere, and show them how much you care about them?

A genuine compliment – or in other words, positive feedback or engagement.

How do you give a genuine compliment or effective positive engagement?

Despite popular belief, positive engagement is very simple. It doesn’t require pomp and circumstance, nor does it have to be grandiose or a result of a major accomplishment.

All you have to do is give your full attention to an individual, make eye contact, use their name, and compliment something specific that is positive. That’s it!

Can I compliment the whole class?

The problem with complimenting the whole class is that while the kids who don’t need the compliments (because they’re doing well) know that you are talking to them, the kids who actually need these positive engagements will simply think these compliments don’t apply to them. The irony is that these kids are the ones who need these positive engagements to feel seen and heard. As such, it is worthwhile to take the time to seek these individuals out and give them the genuine compliments they need in order to succeed.

How does ClasStars help with positive engagement?

ClasStars is built to help you keep track of how you distribute positive engagements through the school day – to whom you gave positive feedback and how many you gave to which students.

You simply set up your classroom in the app – if the school is licensed, the setup is automatic! – start a session, and throughout the day (or during pre-determined times of the day – whichever works better for you), set time aside to be purposeful about giving positive feedback. With a single swipe, you can track who got how much positive feedback each day. With this insight, you can make sure that each kid gets the minimal daily positive feedback required to be successful.

Disclaimer: ClasStars does not make you a better teacher, but positive engagement is the heart and soul of ClasStars. Our mission is to enable teachers to become the source of encouragement and empowerment that students need, and we believe that regular, trackable positive engagement is at the heart of student-teacher relationships.
